Through the series “Great Orchestras of the World”, the International Festival “George Enescu” places itself amongst one of the top events of this kind in the whole world, managing to bring together established orchestras recognized worldwide, that top the bill in New York, Melbourne or Vienna. Staatskapelle Berlin (conductor Daniel Barenboim), Orchestra Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (conductor Antonio Pappano) and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam (conductor Mariss Jansons) are only a few of the orchestras present at the Enescu Festival, the most popular cultural event in Romania and also the most sought-after by the foreigners worldwide. “The Salzburg Festival now has a rival: the great classics are coming to the International Festival George Enescu in Romania, at low-priced tickets”, wrote The Guardian in 2007.

    Description:

The George Enescu Festival celebrates the international Richard Wagner year, by presenting for the first time in the last 50 years the tetralogy „Der Ring des Nibelungen”. The Rhine’s Gold, Walkiria, Siegfried and The God’s Twilight, the most spectacular works of opera from all times, will be played in concert by the Symphonic Radio Orchestra from Berlin, conducted by Marek Janowski (at the Grand Palace Hall).

Combining elements from German and Scandinavian myths, Wagner wrote the librettos himself, imagining it as „the ultimate work of art”. The magic ring smithed by the dwarf Alberich from the gold he stole from the Rhine’s Daughters, a piece of jewelry that gives power over the whole world, constitutes the plot that involves three generations of characters, gods and mythical creatures. Some of the most important soloists of wagnerian repertoire and some of the most representative opera singers from Romania are part of the distribution.
